The concluding ceremony of the 29th Mahaweli Sports Festival was held today at the National Playground in Polonnaruwa, under the patronage of President Maithripala Sirisena.
The President presented trophies to the winners of the athletic events which were participated by more than 4,500 athletes from 10 Mahaweli Zones in the island. U. R. D. Rajapaksha from Huruluwewa Zone was presented with the trophy for the Champion Sportsman of the track and field events by the President.
The female champion of track and field events was Nadeesha Ramanayake who set a record at 400- meter running event by ending it in 56 seconds. She received the trophy from the President.
The overall championship was won by Mahaweli B Zone by getting 82 marks while Mahaweli H Zone won the second place by getting 63 marks. Victoria Zone won the third place.
State Minister of Mahaweli Development and Environment Mahinda Amaraweera, Chief Minister of North-Central Province Peshala Jayarathne, Secretary to the Ministry of Mahaweli Development and Environment Anura Dissanayake Director General of Mahaweli Gotabhaya Jayarathne and the Director of Mahaweli Center Anura Lekamge were among those who were present on this occasion.
